take back control of your body

I knew it was time to leave my corporate career for good when I realized that the lifestyle was slowly killing me.

I was sitting for 12+ hours a day. I spent most of the day indoors staring at my laptop, phone, or TV. I always had a huge headache at the end of the workday. I ate a lot of takeout because I had no time or energy to cook. I spent so much of my free time mindlessly scrolling through social media because I didn’t have enough energy for much else.

I was chronically stressed. I often went to bed thinking about all the things I had to do for work, and woke up dreading the day ahead. Even when I got 8 hours of sleep I didn’t wake up feeling refreshed, so I relied on caffeine to function. I constantly craved sugar and carbs. I used food, alcohol, and reality TV to numb myself to the stress and existential angst.

Sound familiar? This kind of lifestyle is so normalized that I didn’t even know there was anything wrong with it. I felt like shit all the time, but hey, doesn’t everyone? I thought I was just getting old. Everyone around me had similar problems, so I thought this was normal.

It is absolutely not normal. Life doesn’t have to be this way. Is there a little voice inside of you wondering if there’s a better way to live? Yes, yes there is. I’m living it right now. It’s possible. Once I decided to take control of my life and unapologetically prioritize my health and happiness, I started to feel like a much more powerful version of myself. I’m working fewer hours than ever, I’m more relaxed than ever, I’m having the most fun I’ve had in a long time… And the craziest thing is that even professional success seems to be flowing into my life without my having to chase it.

When I quit my job, some people called it “risky”. Sometimes when people say “risk”, they just mean “change”. The real risk would have been to stick with my old life, which I’m sure would have gotten me seriously sick eventually.

If you want to learn more about how modern life is harming our health and what you can do to help yourself, here are some books I’d recommend:

  • Good Energy, by Casey Means

  • Metabolical, by Robert Lustig

  • The Myth of Normal, by Gabor Maté
